Volunteering In Bali: How To Give Back

By

Many travelers quickly develop a deep affection for Bali after just one visit, prompting them to ponder, “How can I become more engaged and have a positive impact?” However, it’s important to understand the regulations surrounding volunteering in Bali, particularly the requirement for the proper visa.

Volunteering while on a regular Tourist Visa is strictly prohibited in Bali.

Violating this rule can result in severe consequences such as significant fines, deportation, or even imprisonment. Nonetheless, it is possible to obtain a suitable visa that permits volunteering in Bali.

The Indonesian government prohibits visitors on tourist visas from engaging in any form of work, whether paid or unpaid. They categorize tourists who volunteer without the appropriate visa as ‘illegal foreign workers’.

Despite the risks, some individuals still choose to volunteer without the proper visa, but this is not advisable. The consequences of being caught can be dire, including being permanently banned from returning to Bali or facing substantial fines.

When searching for volunteering opportunities online, it’s essential to exercise caution. While many organizations may seem legitimate, not all adhere to Indonesian laws. Legitimate volunteering organizations should assist volunteers in obtaining the necessary permits, such as the KITAS Permit and Temporary Stay Visa.

If volunteering is not an option, there are alternative ways to make a positive impact in Bali without directly volunteering:

  1. Practice responsible waste management by avoiding single-use plastic items and properly disposing of trash. Consider participating in beach/village clean-up efforts to contribute to Bali’s conservation.
  2. Show appreciation for exceptional service by generously tipping local individuals. Providing cash directly to locals can be a meaningful way to support the community.
  3. Support local Balinese foundations and non-profits dedicated to various causes such as children’s welfare, poverty alleviation, and animal welfare. Making a donation to organizations aligned with your values can make a significant difference.
  4. Support our cause where we share some percentage of our profit from any of our tours to provide free meals, studying kit, food donation etc to the less fortunate especially children and elderly people.
